McCall's:
Page Layout
Otto Storch was a postwar 20th-century designer who was an art director at McCall’s, the First Magazine for Women, from 1953 to 1969. The magazine included recipes, clothing patterns, advice columns, information on the newest fashion trends, makeup, and much more. One of the key factors in Storch’s magazine layouts was how he found ways to make type into an object or interact with other graphical elements in clever ways. Other key factors in his designs were his ability to select lively photography and make small items appear large.
After this study, I decided to remake the magazine but tailored for the modern 21st-century woman. The digital sketches shown are some of the initial concepts I experimented with imagery, layout, and typography. The copy for the final is about Storch's life, based on an article from the Art Directors Club of New York and the Society of Illustrators, where he talks about his career and experiences with designer Alexey Brodovitch, his professor and mentor.
